How Australians performed in the NBA on January 23, 2025

  • Dyson Daniels records third double-double of his career
  • Three Australians were DNP-coach's decision
  • Ben Simmons out again with illness

Detroit Pistons spoiled Dyson Daniels' career-tying night as the Atlanta Hawks dropped their second straight NBA contest, losing 114-104 (Game Centre) victory at State Farm Arena on Thursday, January 23, 2025.

Daniels, 21, stuffed the stat sheet on his way to a 20-10 double-double. Ten rebounds tied his career high. He's had 10 against Houston in 2023 and Cleveland in 2024.

The Australian Boomers guard went 10-from-21 from the field, added two assists and two more steals to his league-leading tally.

Cade Cunningham led the charge for the Pistons with a masterful 29-point, 11-assist performance, outgunning Trae Young in a battle of young point guard talents.

The Pistons came out of the gates firing on all cylinders, racing to a 36-26 lead after the first quarter. Detroit connected on 8-from-17 three-pointers in the first half.

Atlanta showed signs of life in the fourth quarter, trimming the deficit. However, the Hawks' comeback bid fell short as they struggled mightily from beyond the arc, hitting just 6-from-38 attempts (15.8%) for the game.

The loss drops Atlanta to 22-21 on the season, while the resurgent Pistons improves to 23-21.

While Detroit scorched the nets at a 50% clip from the field, Atlanta managed just 37.9%. The Pistons' efficiency extended to the free-throw line, where they connected on 18-of-19 (94.7%). Detroit also won the battle of the boards, out-rebounding the Hawks 51-47 behind Jalen Duren's 12 boards and Isaiah Stewart's 12 off the bench.

While Cunningham shone brightest, he had plenty of help from his supporting cast. Ausar Thompson continued his strong rookie campaign with 16 points and 3 steals, while Malik Beasley caught fire off the bench, pouring in 19 points on 5-from-11 shooting from three-point range.
