Perth snaps two-game losing streak with big win

  • Miela Sowah leads Perth Lynx with 24 points

  • UC Capitals struggle offensively, shooting just 31.3% from the field

It wasn't close. Perth Lynx bounced back from back-to-back losses with a commanding wire-to-wire 87-63 win (Game Centre) against the the struggling UC Capitals in Round 7 of the 2024-25 WNBL season in Perth on Thursday, December 12, 2024.

The Lynx lead 20-10 after one, 57-30 at the half and 77-44 at the end of the third before clearing the bench.

Perth moved to 7-3, cementing its second-placed position on the ladder behind the 8-0 Bendigo Spirit.

The Capitals have now lost three on the bounce and are on the bottom of the ladder.

Sowah spearheads Lynx attack

Miela Sowah (née Goodchild) turned in a stellar performance for the Perth Lynx, leading all scorers with 24 points. The sharp-shooting guard was efficient from the field, going 6-of-16 and converting 12 of her 13 free throw attempts. Sowah's offensive outburst was complemented by a strong all-around game, as she added seven rebounds and two assists in just over 28 minutes of play.

The Lynx's frontcourt duo of Laeticia Amihere and Teige Morrell dominated the glass, combining for 28 rebounds. Amihere posted a big-time double-double with 15 points and 16 rebounds, while Morrell pulled down 12 boards in just 14 minutes of action.

Capitals struggle to find offensive rhythm

The UC Capitals had a tough night offensively, shooting a mere 31.3% from the field and 20.8% from beyond the arc. WNBA-bound Nyadiew Puoch led the Capitals with 18 points, but it wasn't enough to keep pace with the high-powered Lynx offense.

Ella Tofaeono also provided a bright spot for the Capitals, recording a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. However, the team's leading scorer, Jade Melbourne, was held to just 2 points on 0-of-4 shooting, though she did contribute six assists and six rebounds.

What's Next

Perth go on the road to Bendigo in Round 8 (Game Centre) in what promises to be the match-up of the season on Thursday, December 19, 2024 while the 2-7 Capitals have a chance at redemption against the struggling 2-6 Adelaide Lightning (Game Centre), who parted ways with head coach Nat Hurst this week, on Sunday December 15, 2024.
