Flames' Cayla George's monster double-double secures win

  • Sydney Flames beat Perth Lynx 86-75.
  • Cayla George leads with a stellar 28 points and 14 rebounds.
  • Perth Lynx struggled from the charity stripe, shooting only 35%.

It was the Cayla George Show.

The Australian Opals and former WNBA star dominated the Sydney Flames 86-75 win (Game Centre) against the second-placed Perth Lynx in Round Six of the WNBL 2024-205 season on December 7, 2024 at Quaycentre in Sydney.

George, 35, filled up the stats sheet: 28 points; 14 rebounds; one assists; one steal; and three blocks in 38 minutes. She went 10-from-23 from the field, 5-from-10 from three and 3-of-3 from the line. The win pushed the Flames to 3-4 on the season and into fourth place.

Perth (6-3) lost its second in row after losing 72-66 to the league-leading unbeaten Bendigo Spirt on the back of Sami Whitcomb's historic triple double.

The Lynx will rue their poor free throw shooting — they shot a dismal 7-of-20 at the line. Thirteen missed free throws in an 11-point loss on the road is a coach killer.

Game Highlights and Key Performances

Sydney's Shaneice Swain added 20 points, grabbed seven boards and dished out five assists to be a solid one-two punch with George.

Lynx's Miela Sowah (nee Goodchild) and Stephanie Gorman scored 13 and 12 points respectively. But the team's overall shooting was poor: 27-from-78 from the field (34.6%); 14-from-44 from three (31.8%); and 35% from the free throw line.

It's tough to win with those shooting stats when The Flames went 10-of-12 from the charity stripe, and 33-from-83 (40%) from the field.

The Flames had four players in double digits: George (28); Swain (20); Carla Pitman (13); and Emma Clarke (13).

The Lynx had five in double figures: Miela Sowah (13); Ally Wilson (12); Stephanie Gorman (12); Anneli Maley (11); and Laeticia Amihere (10).
