Sowah ensures Perth Lynx move into second
Perth Lynx second on WNBL25 ladder but Townsville Fire is hunting top two finish
- Perth Lynx sets up winner takes all (second) in last game of the season against Townsville
- Miela Sowah leads Perth with 22 points
- United's Jaz Shelley drops 25 points on 7-from-16 from three
Perth Lynx deliver the win they needed, overwhelming Geelong United 95-77 (Game Centre) at home, showcasing their offensive firepower and defensive prowess heading into the WNBL25 finals series.
The victory moved them to second, dealing a significant blow to Geelong's playoff aspirations. United's first WNBL season is over with no chance of making the playoffs.
Perth is 15-5 but third-placed Townsville Fire has a game in hand at 14-5 with a 17-point advantage in points for and against.
Second place could come down to the Perth versus Townsville clash on February 16, 2025 in Townsville in the last game of the WNBL25 regular season.
The Lynx set the tone early, racing to a 28-18 lead after the first quarter behind the sharp shooting of Miela Sowah and Stephanie Gorman.
Geelong, led by the tenacious Jazmin Shelley, attempted to claw back in the second period, but Perth's balanced attack and stifling defence maintained their advantage.
The home side's lead ballooned to 20 points midway through the third quarter, effectively putting the game out of reach.
Perth's dominance was evident on both ends of the court. They shot an impressive 54.7% from the field, including 12 three-pointers, while holding Geelong to just 38.7% shooting.
The Lynx's rebounding superiority was particularly noteworthy, outmuscling United 49-30 on the boards, with Anneli Maley pulling down a game-high 14 rebounds.
Miela Sowah led Perth with 22 points, including four triples, while adding 5 assists and 4 rebounds. Her performance was complemented by Stephanie Gorman's efficient 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting, including a scorching 5-of-9 from beyond the arc.
For Geelong, Jazmin Shelley's 25-point effort on 7-from-16 three-point shooting stood out, but it wasn't enough to overcome Perth's balanced attack.
