Australian point guard Georgia Amoore's remarkable growth at Kentucky Wildcats puts WNBA on table

  • WNBA insiders reveal Amoore's WNBA draft prospect have risen considerably after transferring from Virginia Tech
  • Amoore leads four-seed Kentucky Wildcats into the NCAA women's tournament

WNBA prospect and fifth-year senior point guard Georgia Amoore has established herself as one of the premier playmakers and scorers in college basketball after transferring to Kentucky from Virginia Tech before the start of the 2024-25 NCAA women's season.

She averaged 19.1 points, 2.2 rebounds, and an impressive 6.9 assists per game this season, while shooting at a solid 42.5% from the field, to lead the Wildcats to 22-7 record and fourth in the SEC, a conference that features Dawn Staley's powerhouse South Carolina.

“It’s been such a blessing to be able to play with a whole bunch of girls who are hungry, who came to the SEC wanting more," Amoore said.

"It’s just be so fun and gratifying to be around," she said.

Amoore, 23, leads the four-seed Kentucky into March Madness searching for a National Championship. The Wildcats face 13-seed Liberty on Saturday, March 22 at 3am.

An ESPN analyst said she had spoken to several WNBA general managers "who were high on Georgia" and "could see her running an offense in the WNBA with her high leadership" ability.

The WNBA Draft is April 14, 2025 and Amoore's stocks have risen considerably this season and is now a potential early round draft pick.

Georgia Amoore's career summary

  • 155 games, 153 starts across five seasons.
  • Career averages: 15.5 PPG, 5.5 APG, 2.5 RPG in 34.7 MPG.
  • Solid 40.3% FG, 35.4% 3PT, and 82.8% FT.
  • Turnovers: 2.9 per game (expected for a high-usage guard).
  • Strong free throw shooter, consistently above 80% FT.

Amoore moved to Kentucky for former Virginia Tech head coach Kenny Brooks.

“I didn’t know what the University of Kentucky was when I was a child, that’s how removed college basketball was where I was," she said.

The Oklahoma masterclass (February 3, 2025)

Perhaps the most exceptional performance of Amoore's season came against Oklahoma on February 3rd. In a thrilling 95-86 victory against the then-13th ranked Sooners, Amoore was simply on fire, pouring in 43 points on an exceptional 15-from-22 shooting display. She was outstanding from beyond the arc, connecting on seven of her 12 three-point attempts.

Beyond her scoring explosion, Amoore dished out eight assists without a single turnover, demonstrating her complete control of the game. This performance wasn't just about volume scoring — it was an exhibition of efficiency and basketball intelligence at the highest level.

Mississippi State domination (January 3, 2025)

Against Mississippi State, Amoore delivered another memorable performance in a dominant 91-69 win. She scored 27 points while showcasing her elite three-point shooting, making seven of her 10 attempts from deep. Adding nine assists to her stat line, Amoore orchestrated the Kentucky offense with precision, creating scoring opportunities for herself and her teammates with equal measure.

Triple Threat Against Auburn (January 13, 2025)

Amoore's game against Auburn highlighted her all-round abilities. In an 80-61 victory, she recorded 21 points, but more impressively, dished out 11 assists while grabbing two rebounds. This performance demonstrated her ability to impact games even when her shot wasn't falling at an elite rate (7-from-17 from the field, 1-from-4 from three-point range).

SEC Tournament Heartbreak (March 8, 2025)

In Kentucky's SEC Tournament quarterfinal loss to Oklahoma, Amoore showed tremendous heart despite the disappointing outcome. She scored 29 points, grabbed five rebounds, and added seven assists in 38 minutes of action. Even in defeat, her 12-from-27 shooting display and three made three-pointers showcased her willingness to carry the team on her shoulders when necessary.

The Playmaker: Beyond Scoring

While Amoore's scoring ability naturally draws attention, her playmaking might be her most valuable asset. Throughout the season, she has demonstrated exceptional court vision and passing ability, consistently finding teammates in scoring position.

In eight games this season, Amoore recorded eight or more assists, including a season-high 11 assists against Auburn and 10 against USC Upstate. Her ability to balance scoring and distribution makes her particularly difficult for opponents to defend—focus too much on her scoring, and she'll find open teammates; give her space, and she'll make you pay with her shooting.

Three-Point Proficiency

Amoore's three-point shooting has been a weapon for Kentucky throughout the season. She has multiple games with impressive performances from beyond the arc:

  • 7-from-10 (70%) against Mississippi State
  • 7-from-13 (53.8%) against Belmont
  • 7-from-12 (58.3%) against Oklahoma

This shooting ability stretches defences and creates space for her teammates to operate. When Amoore is connecting from deep, the Kentucky offense becomes significantly more potent and difficult to contain.

Consistency amidst challenges

One of the most impressive aspects of Amoore's season has been her consistency. Despite facing different defensive schemes designed specifically to limit her impact, she has managed to score in double figures in 28 of her 29 games this season.

Even in games where her shooting touch temporarily abandoned her, Amoore found ways to contribute. Against Illinois on November 28th, she shot just 4-from-17 from the field but still managed to dish out eight assists and record two steals in a 76-53 victory.

Defensive contributions

While Amoore's offensive brilliance often takes centre stage, her defensive contributions shouldn't be overlooked. Throughout the season, she has demonstrated quick hands and excellent anticipation, recording multiple steals in eight games. Her defensive awareness complements her offensive skills, making her a truly two-way player despite her smaller stature.

Growth throughout the season

Analysing Amoore's game log reveals a player who continued to evolve throughout the season. As the campaign progressed, she appeared to gain more confidence in her three-point shot and became increasingly comfortable orchestrating the Kentucky offense.

Her ability to adapt to different defensive coverages improved as well. When teams focused on taking away her three-point shot, she showed a willingness to attack the rim or find open teammates. This adaptability makes her particularly valuable in high-pressure situations where adjustments are necessary.

Performance against ranked opponents

Amoore has shown she can perform at her best against top competition. Beyond her 43-point explosion against Oklahoma, she delivered strong performances against several ranked teams:

  • 18 points and 7 assists against #11 Tennessee (win)
  • 16 points against #7 LSU (loss)
  • 14 points against #3 Texas (loss)
  • 16 points and 9 assists against #22 Alabama (win)
  • 19 points and 9 assists against #18 Louisville (win in overtime)

These performances demonstrate that Amoore's skills translate against the highest level of competition—a promising sign for her future basketball prospects.

The Complete Package: Leadership and Intangibles

Beyond the statistical contributions, Amoore has provided Kentucky with exceptional leadership. As a senior guard, she has embraced the responsibility of directing the offense and setting the tone for her teammates both in practice and during games.

Her competitiveness is evident in how she responds to challenges. After difficult shooting nights, she has consistently bounced back with strong performances. Following a 4-from-12 shooting night against UNC on December 6th, she responded with a 5-from-12, 20-point, 9-assist performance against Arizona State in her next game.
