Point guard Georgia Amoore set to become another Aussie in the WNBA in today's Draft

  • Ballarat's Georgia Amoore drafted with the sixth pick in the first round
  • NCAAW superstar Paige Bueckers drafted with the first pick by the Dallas Wings
  • All-American Amoore had a standout season at the Kentucky Wildcats in 2024-25

All-American 5'6" Australian point guard Georgia Amoore, 24, has been selected sixth by the Washington Mystics in today's WNBA Draft.

The Ballarat-born star is the 13th Aussie in the WNBA. She was the only Australian selected out of a total of 39 picks.

"I'm excited to be with the Mystics," Amoore said immediately after being drafted.

"I've taken every opportunity to make the most of it, so now I'm here.

"For as long as people have called me too short, I've been working on ways to counteract that.

"I think I have a little dog in me and I'm going to keep fighting."

The Mystics now have the potential to field an all Australian backcourt with Opals star point guard Jade Melbourne already in Washington DC. Amoore is the highest draft pick since Liz Cambage went with pick 2 by the Tulsa Shock in 2011.

Melbourne is excited for the “two country girls” to take on the biggest basketball league in the world, Code Sports Basketball reported.

"We played Vic Country together and now all of a sudden we’re teammates now in America," Melbourne told Code Sports.

"We’ve had to come to the other side of the world to team up again.

"We’ve all been able to watch her make a name for herself, over in the college system so now it’s really exciting that I get to play with her again.

"Georgia will feel right at home.”

This is the order for WNBA clubs to select their next generation of stars.
