This week in kicks: Green's Skechers move pays off
Aussie dons 'The Greenie', NBL talents test Reeboks and Lakers coach reveals his go-to sneakers.
March in the world of basketball means only one thing, and the madness has been coming thick and fast over the past week.
While one Australian NBA star got a shoe of his own, an NBL team got gifted their own colourway and two of Nike’s signature athletes shared some love.
Plus, we got an insight into which sneakers the world’s top coaches prefer and an Aussie basketball legend sports his iconic kicks.
Josh Green gets Sketchers PE
Josh Green made a massive career move this season, one which coincided with his trade from Dallas to Charlotte.
The Australian guard officially made the jump to Skechers, leaving Nike who he had repped for the first four years of his career and it seems to have paid off.
This week, Green received his first PE with his new brand, receiving a personalised pair of the SKX RESAGRIP dubbed ‘The Greenie’.
The shoe features a blue and green colourway, complete with a Kangaroo stitched on the tongue, which Green debuted in his team’s one-point loss to the Cavaliers.
SEM road test new Reebok sneakers
While the NBL Grand Finals series reached its epic conclusion, 2024/25 semi-finalists the South East Melbourne Phoenix made sure to keep active.
The team linked up with Reebok to test out the brand’s new hoop shoe, a bright green version of the Engine A.
Owen Foxwell and Tom Vodanovich featured in the video, as Reebok look to re-enter the basketball market, decades on from the success of their sneakers with Allen Iverson and Shaquille O’Neal.
NBL fans may recognise the shoe as it was the one worn by Adelaide 36ers import Montrezl Harrell at times throughout the season, as the former NBA Sixth Man of the Year signed a sponsorship deal with Reebok once he arrived in Australia.
Redick reveals go-to coaching shoe
JJ Redick is no stranger to lacing up kicks for NBA courts with the 17-year NBA veteran spending time signed to both Nike and then Adidas throughout his career.
But these days, with his time spent on the side of the courts as opposed to the middle of them, the Los Angeles Lakers head coach has opted for some slightly more muted footwear.
During a segment with GQ, Redick revealed that his go-to coaching shoe is a pair of all-white Common Projects, one for every day and one he keeps on ice.
During his first year leading LA, Redick has alternated between both Common Projects and Nike Panda Dunks, as his squad currently battles for home-court advantage in the upcoming playoffs.
Booker shouts out Wembanyama
This week saw one of Nike’s current star signature athletes shout out their next face of the brand, with Devin Booker showing love to Victor Wembanyama.
Booker, currently on his debut signature shoe with Nike, the BOOK 1, shared a photo of the back of Wembanyama’s PE of the Air Zoom G.T. Hustle 2.
“Wemby got the best logo in sports,” Booker wrote of the San Antonio star, whose alien-head logo adorned the back of the black and green shoe.
While Wembanyama is yet to receive his own shoe, it is no doubt on the way, with the 7'3" frenchman all-but-assured to leave a massive footprint on the sneaker industry.
FIT OF THE WEEK: Johnny Furphy
Every week, we’ll pick one Aussie or Aussie-adjacent hooper who has put together the fit of the week.
Aussie rookie Johnny Furphy has quietly been building an impressive repertoire in his first season in the league and this week’s might be the best yet, a navy Arc’teryx jacket and a pair of white LV trainers.
POST-CREDIT SCENES
Every week there are stories that catch my eye that don’t quite make the cut for whatever reason.
Going forward, I’ll drop a few of those favourites here for a bit of extra reading.
- Socceroos debut Air Max Dn8 ‘Air Max Day’
- PJ Tucker flexes limited Westbrook Jordan 3 PE
