Sandy Brondello named 2025 WNBA All-Star coach after Liberty surge to top of the Eastern standings.

  • Brondello has led the reigning champion NY Liberty to a 12-6 record this season
  • She will get the chance to coach the team captained by Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark
  • They will take on a team captained by WNBA superstar Caitlin Clark

Australian Opals and New York Liberty head coach Sandy Brondello was named as head coach of Team Collier for the 2025 WNBA All-Star Game on July 19, 2025 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

But she and her coaching staff were traded to Team Clark in a stunning, first ever coaches trade.

Brondello earned the honour after guiding the Liberty to a 12–5 record at the midway point of the season, including an 89–79 victory over the LA Sparks earlier today. That win, combined with a Phoenix Mercury loss, elevated New York into the league’s top tier and secured Brondello her first career All-Star coaching nod.

It also marked a personal milestone — her 92nd win as Liberty head coach, tying her with Bill Laimbeer for second-most in franchise history.

She will join Cheryl Reeve of the Minnesota Lynx, whose team holds the league’s best record at 17–2. The pair were selected based on their teams’ standings at the conclusion of Monday’s games.

The All-Star coaching appointment harps back to her playing days in the WNBA for Brondello, who was one of two Australians selected for the league’s inaugural All-Star Game in 1999, where she played alongside Michele Timms at New York's famous Madison Square Garden.

This latest recognition adds to an already decorated coaching career for Brondello, which includes leading the Opals to a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics, coaching the Liberty to their first WNBA championship in 2024, and now, guiding one of the All-Star squads in Indianapolis.

The 2025 WNBA All-Star Game is set to bring together the league’s most celebrated talent in a showcase event, with Brondello firmly among its leading figures — both on the court and now on the sideline.
