What Happened
The Boomers have opened their FIBA Asia Cup campaign in emphatic fashion, cruising to a 97–61 win over South Korea in Jeddah, Saudia Arabia.
Led by newly-signed Cairns Taipan Jack McVeigh’s 20 points on a highly efficient 6-of-11 shooting night, the Australians were in control from the outset.
They shot more than 50 percent from the field and buried 15 threes at nearly 58 percent, punishing Korea’s defence in transition and in the halfcourt.
It was a balanced effort for Adam Caporn’s side as they search for an Asia Cup three-peat, with all 12 players seeing the floor and 11 of them registering at least one bucket, including 17-year-old Dash Daniels who had his first bucket in the green and gold.
Jaylin Galloway finished with 12 points, Xavier Cooks 10 points, proved more than enough in support behind McVeigh, while William Hickey and Ben Henshall added energy and scoring off the bench.
The up-tempo defensive tone for Australia was set early, with the Boomers forceing 14 turnovers, two blocked shots, and limited Korea to just 33 percent shooting from the field.
Korea’s Junghyun Lee was the lone bright spot, finishing with 20 points, but lacked support, with no other Korean player scored in double figures until late in the fourth.
McVeigh’s sharp-shooting stretch in the third quarter blew the game wide open, as Australia stretched their lead beyond 30 and never looked back. The Boomers dominated the rebound count 49–33 and out-assisted their opponents 12–11.
With a lead that didn't drop below 20 points in the final term, new Boomers head coach Adam Caporn used the second half to share minutes and build rhythm ahead of the tougher tests to come.
Australia will next play Lebanon in a 2022 Asia Cup Grand Final rematch on Saturday morning at 1am AEST.
