NBL1 West Round 1 on April 4, 2025: Overtime thriller fires up opening round of the 2025 season

  • Lakeside's Corey Shervill's 23-10 double double not enough against Perry Lakes
  • Taeshon Cherry led Willetton Tigers to a 14-point road win against Mandurah
  • Isaac White drops 27 on East Perth Eagles in 21-point win

Perry Lakes escaped with a dramatic 88–87 overtime win over Lakeside in the closest contest of the NBL1 West Men’s opening round. It was a collective effort from the Hawks, led by Jaden Stanley-Williams who scored 18 points and played with energy on both ends, while Keegan Phillips added 12 points, five rebounds, and four assists. Nicholas Floyd gave Perry Lakes a huge boost off the bench, scoring nine points on a perfect 4-from-4 shooting. Despite blowing a double-digit lead in the fourth, the Hawks regrouped in overtime, holding on defensively in the closing seconds to seal the win.

Captain Adrian Nobensi was pivotal with six points, five rebounds, and five assists, and Davin Miller contributed 11 points and eight rebounds in just under 13 minutes. Perry Lakes didn’t shoot the ball particularly well from deep (30.4%) but were efficient inside the arc and made 19-of-27 free throws, which proved crucial in such a tight contest. The team’s defense, especially in overtime, helped stifle Lakeside’s momentum after they poured in 34 fourth-quarter points to force the extra period.

Lakeside was led by Corey Shervill, who had a standout performance with 23 points and 10 rebounds while playing all 40 minutes. AJ Wilson was also strong, finishing with 19 points on 61.5% shooting. Captain Joshua Davey anchored the interior with a 10-point, 13-rebound double-double. But despite winning the rebounding battle 48–42 and getting more shots up (77 FGAs to Perry Lakes’ 69), Lakeside struggled from three (24.2%) and couldn’t find a game-winner when it mattered most.

Willetton Tigers @ Mandurah Magic

Willetton came away with a strong 95–81 road win over Mandurah, built on balanced scoring and high-efficiency shooting from key contributors. Taeshon Cherry was the standout, delivering a game-high 24 points and seven rebounds on 8-from-14 shooting, including four made threes.

The athletic forward was a consistent offensive threat, attacking inside and knocking down jumpers, helping Willetton establish a 12-point lead in the opening quarter that they never relinquished. Thomas Gerovich was equally impactful, finishing with 16 points, nine rebounds, and three assists.

Starting guard Tyreese Davis added 16 points and hit four threes of his own, keeping Mandurah’s defense on edge with his outside shooting. Damien Scott chipped in with 11 points on an efficient 5-from-6 from the field and also grabbed eight rebounds, while Roosevelt Williams Jr added 11 points and four assists despite a tough shooting night. Willetton shared the ball well (21 assists) and shot 50% from the field as a team, including 47.6% from three-point range — numbers that proved too much for Mandurah to overcome.

Mandurah was led by Julian Pesava, who poured in 25 points on 9-from-14 shooting and was aggressive throughout, attacking the rim and hitting three triples. Sammie Freeman added a strong double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds, while Lachlan Bertram contributed 16 points but struggled with shooting efficiency. Jahcoree Ealy added 13 points and played with defensive energy, recording three steals. However, Mandurah committed 14 turnovers and gave up too many clean looks from deep, unable to slow Willetton’s offensive rhythm across four quarters.

Joondalup Wolves @ Perth Redbacks

Perth edged out Joondalup in a thrilling 85–83 contest at Belmont Oasis Leisure Centre, thanks to clutch performances from their backcourt duo of Joe Cook-Green and Lochlan Cummings. Cook-Green led all Perth scorers with 24 points, four assists, and three rebounds, shooting efficiently and hitting four threes to keep the scoreboard ticking. Cummings added 23 points, six rebounds, and five assists of his own, drawing contact and converting at the line (5-of-6) to help close the game in the fourth. Their combined scoring and ability to control tempo in key stretches proved decisive in a tightly contested battle.

Callan McDonald was a major factor inside, recording a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds on 63.6% shooting. Jonah Underwood also pulled down 10 boards to go with six points, helping Perth win the rebounding battle 51–46. While the team struggled from three (31.3%), their interior efficiency and effort on the glass kept them in the game. Perth trailed by six going into the fourth but rallied with a 26–15 final term, showing resilience and composure under pressure.

For Joondalup, CJ Turnage was electric, posting 34 points, 12 rebounds, and five assists. He was relentless around the rim, shooting 11-from-16 from inside the arc. Ethan Elliott added 22 points and 10 rebounds, while Caleb Davis contributed 13 points and a pair of triples. Despite shooting a better overall percentage and controlling long stretches of the game, Joondalup couldn’t contain Perth’s late-game surge and paid the price for poor three-point shooting (14.8%) and missed opportunities down the stretch.

Rockingham Flames @ East Perth Eagles

Rockingham delivered a dominant offensive performance in their 115–94 win over East Perth, powered by standout games from Isaac White and Emmett Naar. White poured in 27 points, dished seven assists, and pulled down five rebounds, shooting 56.3% from the field and knocking down three triples. Naar was equally solid, finishing with 26 points and six assists on a blistering 12-from-15 shooting night, including 12 points in the paint. Together, the dynamic backcourt combined for 53 points and set the tempo from start to finish.

The Flames’ supporting cast also stepped up. Callum Beard added 16 points on 6-from-9 shooting, hitting three of his four attempts from deep, while captain Justin Beard chipped in with 10 points, seven boards, and four assists. Emmanuel Dech provided scoring punch off the bench with 13 points in just under 15 minutes. Rockingham shot 53.9% from the floor and 42.4% from beyond the arc, racking up 31 assists on 42 made field goals. Their ability to move the ball and find high-quality looks overwhelmed East Perth’s defense.

For East Perth, Max Rice led the scoring with 19 points and four assists, hitting five threes at a 50% clip. Captain Taylor Young contributed 18 points and six assists, and Chier Maker added 16 points on 55% shooting. Despite solid individual efforts, East Perth struggled defensively and couldn’t contain Rockingham’s high-octane attack. The Eagles allowed 33 points in the first quarter and were outscored in every period but the fourth. They shot 43.4% as a team but allowed 115 points and couldn’t keep pace in a game where Rockingham’s depth and ball movement proved decisive.

Eastern Suns @ SW Slammers

The Eastern Suns (1-0) defeated the SW Slammers (0-1) 81-61 at Eaton Rec Centre on Saturday.

Marshall Nelson delivered an outstanding performance with 20 points and seven rebounds, while Travis Fee added 14 points and seven boards to give the Suns their first win of the season.

Eastern Suns controlled the glass throughout the contest, outrebounding the Slammers 61-36 including a dominant 25-11 advantage on the offensive boards.

Jamal Poplar led SW Slammers with 16 points and eight rebounds, but the home team struggled from beyond the arc, shooting a dismal 16.7% on three-point attempts.

The Suns led for nearly 33 minutes of game time, gradually building their advantage to a game-high 26 points.

Geraldton @ Joondalup

Joondalup (1-0) edged Geraldton (0-1) 111-107 in a back-and-forth thriller at HBF Arena Joondalup. CJ Turnage paced Joondalup with 34 points and nine rebounds, while Ethan Elliott contributed 30 points including five triples, shooting an efficient 55% from the field.

This high-scoring affair featured 27 lead changes and 10 ties, with neither team leading by more than eight points.

Akeem Springs recorded a double-double for Geraldton with 32 points and 11 rebounds, knocking down seven three-pointers on 87.5% shooting from deep.

Johny Narkle added 28 points and eight rebounds for Geraldton, who struggled to contain Joondalup's balanced attack that included 24 assists against just 10 turnovers.

Lakeside @ Warwick

Warwick (1-0) dominated Lakeside (0-1) 117-79 at Lakeside Recreation Centre behind Elijah Pepper's explosive 50-point performance.

Pepper shot a blistering 72% from the field, including 9-of-15 from three-point range, while adding seven rebounds to lead Warwick to a commanding victory.

The home team never stood a chance as Warwick showcased exceptional shooting efficiency, connecting on 59.7% of their field goal attempts and 42.2% from beyond the arc.

Corey Shervill led Lakeside with 20 points and nine rebounds, while Isaiah Lewis added 19 points, but Lakeside's 23.8% three-point shooting doomed their chances.

Warwick's defense forced 10 turnovers and limited Lakeside to just four minutes and 32 seconds of time in the lead.

Cockburn @ Goldfields

Goldfields (1-0) secured a dominant 106-66 victory against Cockburn (0-1) at Niels Hansen Basketball Stadium.

Joshua Duach recorded a double-double with 28 points and 10 rebounds, while Shaun Stewart added 25 points, seven rebounds, and five steals in a complete team performance.

Cockburn struggled throughout, committing 22 turnovers that Goldfields converted into 19 points.

De'Sean Parsons contributed a double-double with 24 points and 12 rebounds for Goldfields, who shot an efficient 52.1% from the field. Chan Nai led Cockburn with 18 points on 70% shooting, but received little support as the visitors never led in the contest and trailed by as many as 42 points.
