Opals hopeful Courtney Woods secures new deal with Fire ahead of WNBL finals

  • The Townsville Fire have locked in Courtney Woods until the end of the 2026/27 WNBL season
  • Woods has been with the Fire her entire WNBL career after signing in 2020
  • Her career-best form, including an average of 16.2 points per game, could see her earn selection for the Opals

The Townsville Fire have received a major boost on the eve of the WNBL finals after securing Opals hopeful Courtney Woods on an extension which will see her remain with the club until at least the end of the 2026/27 season.

Woods has had a career year for the Fire, averaging a career high in points with 16.2 per game as well as rebounds and assist per game at six each, leading Townsville to a dominant second half of the season to move their way into third spot and secure another playoffs spot.

The new deal will extend her career with the Fire, which already includes a championship in the 2022/23 campaign, to at least seven seasons after joining the club straight out of college, where she became the all-time leader in three-pointers made and games played at Northern Illinois University.

“I’m very thankful to continue my career in Townsville. This club has given me so much as a human and basketball player and I’m so proud to continue to be a part of this very special community," Woods said in a release from the Fire.

Fire coach Shannon Seebohm highlighted the leadership skills and experience Woods provides his team, when announcing the new deal.

"Courtney has been a huge part of what we’ve built here and having her locked in for the long term is fantastic for our program. She brings so much to our group—not just with her scoring ability but with her leadership, toughness, and the way she connects with our fans and community," he said.

Woods has continuously improved during her WNBL career, averaging just single figures in her first three seasons before a dramatic increase last season, taking her points per game total to 13.8 for the 2023/24 season and again rising by more than two points per game this season.

The Queensland product has also dominated the lower levels, winning back-to-back NBL1 North championships with the Townsville Flames and Northside Wizards in 2022 and 2023, as well as the NBL1 North Women's MVP award in 2023.

Her current form has put her in the frame for Opals selection, where she is yet to make her debut for the national team, and with Australia to face the New Zealand Tall Ferns in a three-game series in May, Woods could be well on her way to another significant career milestone this year.

Townsville have two regular season games remaining, facing Sydney on the road on Wednesday before returning home to take on the Perth Lynx on Sunday.
