Stith and Wilson earn MVP honours as Australia dominate FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup in Singapore.

  • The Australian Gangurrus won both the men's and women's FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup tournaments
  • The victory was the third consecutive gold medal for Australia's women while it was back-to-back wins for the men
  • Australia's Ally Wilson and Dillon Stith claimed MVP of their respective tournaments

Australia's dominance at the FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup has continued after both the Gangurrus men and women's team taking home gold in Singapore.

The women's team — featuring Ally Wilson, Anneli Maley, Miela Sowah and Marena Whittle — completed a threepeat following a 21-17 victory over Japan in the final, while the men — made up of Dillon Stith, Jonah Bolden, Alex Higgins-Titsha and Lachlan Barker — beat China to capture Australia's second consecutive gold medal in the male division.

Another gold caps-off an impressive past season for Perth Lynx trio in Wilson, Sowah and Maley after they helped lead the WNBL club to the semi-finals of the Australian league.

Wilson, who enjoyed a career-best year, establishing herself as one of the best guards in the WNBL, earning a call-up to the Australian Opals squad for the Trans Tasman series against the New Zealand Tall Ferns in early May, was named MVP of the tournament alongside Japan’s Fuyuko Takahashi.

The 31-year-old South Australian's averages of 15.7 points, 5.8 assists and 5.7 rebounds per game earned her All-NBL First Team honours and the Lynx MVP award and she has also been a stalwart of the Australian 3x3 program along with teammates Maley and Sowah while so has Whittle, who was coming off another impressive season in Europe.

The Australian women were coached by Damon Lowery, who recently celebrated the Illawarra Hawks' drought-breaking NBL championship win after being part of the club's last title in 2001.

For the Australian men, life couldn't be better for Higgins-Titsha, who was recently upgraded from a development player with the Cairns Taipans to a fully contracted member of the NBL franchise following a breakout season under Adam Forde, who was also his 3x3 coach at the Asia Cup.

The 6'6" athletic forward was a shining light in an otherwise disappointing year for the Taipans, even starting for Cairns in several games and showcasing his skills.

His Cairns and Gangurrus teammate Dillon Stith, who nailed two clutch free-throws against New Zealand in the semi-final, claimed MVP of the tournament.
