Alex Ducas and his OKC teammates will be honoured with designated days by the Mayor.

Australian basketball has a new champion and now, a day in his honour.

Following the Oklahoma City Thunder’s stunning 2025 NBA Championship win over the Indiana Pacers, Thunder rookie Alex Ducas has been awarded his own holiday in Oklahoma City.

Mayor David Holt announced every member of the Thunder’s championship roster, along with key figures such as team owner Clay Bennett, GM Sam Presti and coach Mark Daigneault, will have a day named after them between June 30 and July 30, 2025.

Ducas will be celebrated on July 8, now officially recognised as Alex Ducas Day in Oklahoma City — a remarkable accolade for the 23-year-old from Geraldton, Western Australia.

While MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander fittingly closes the month-long festival on July 30, the inclusion of Ducas in this civic honour roll is a powerful recognition of his role in the Thunder’s fairytale season.

As reported by Thunder insider Brandon Rahbar, the city’s tribute is both symbolic and sincere — an entire month set aside to commemorate each individual who helped bring a title to Oklahoma for the first time.

For Australian basketball, Ducas’s rise is a story of perseverance, talent, and a well-trodden pathway paying off. From Geraldton’s Nagle Catholic College to starring for the hometown Buccaneers, Ducas honed his craft on WA’s regional courts before earning a place at Basketball Australia’s Centre of Excellence. His journey then took him to California’s St Mary’s College, an established pipeline for Aussie talent to the U.S., where he followed in the footsteps of Patty Mills and Matthew Dellavedova.

Now, he joins both of those names on an even shorter list: Australians to win an NBA Championship.
