These nine training drills will help U14 players develop game-speed skills, decision-making, and competitive toughness.
1. Full-Court Dribble Attack (Ball-Handling & Transition Play)
π Objective: Improve ball-handling under pressure and decision-making in transition.
β³ Duration: 10 minutes
πΉ Setup:
- Players line up in groups at the baseline with a basketball.
- One defender starts at the free-throw line.
π How to Play:
- The offensive player dribbles full court against a live defender.
- The offensive player must use crossover, behind-the-back, or spin moves to beat the defender.
- If they pass half-court successfully, they attempt a layup or pull-up jumper.
- The defender becomes the next dribbler, and a new defender steps in.
π― Coaching Focus:
β Keep dribbles low and controlled at high speed.
β Encourage quick first steps and reading the defender.
β Emphasise finishing at the rim under control.
π Variations:
- Add a secondary defender at the three-point line for added challenge.
- Players must use their weak hand for the first three rounds.
2. Pick-and-Roll Reads (Offensive Decision-Making)
π Objective: Teach ball-handlers how to read the defense and make smart plays.
β³ Duration: 12-15 minutes
πΉ Setup:
- A ball-handler, a screener, and a defender work on a half-court setup.
- The defender plays different types of coverage (switch, hedge, drop).
π How to Play:
- The screener sets a solid pick while the ball-handler reads the defender.
- Depending on how the defender reacts:
- If the defender goes under β Take the shot.
- If the defender switches β Attack the mismatch.
- If the defender hedges β Pass to the rolling screener.
- Rotate players every few repetitions.
π― Coaching Focus:
β Teach reading defensive coverages instead of making pre-determined moves.
β Ensure proper screening angles for effectiveness.
β Reinforce quick decision-making under pressure.
π Variations:
- Add a help-side defender to practice passing to shooters.
- Restrict dribbles to force quicker decisions.
3. Closeout & Defensive Rotation Drill (Defensive Awareness & Footwork)
π Objective: Improve defensive footwork and team rotations.
β³ Duration: 10 minutes
πΉ Setup:
- Three offensive players space out around the perimeter.
- Three defenders start inside the key.
π How to Play:
- The coach passes the ball to an offensive player.
- A defender closes out, contesting the shot or drive.
- Offense swings the ball, forcing defenders to rotate and recover.
- Continue for 30 seconds before switching sides.
π― Coaching Focus:
β Defenders must stay low and balanced during closeouts.
β Encourage communication on rotations.
β Teach choppy steps to prevent over-committing.
π Variations:
- Allow live 3-on-3 play after the third pass.
- Make defenders rotate after every closeout to increase reaction time.
4. One-on-One Finishing Through Contact (Finishing & Physicality)
π Objective: Develop scoring under defensive pressure.
β³ Duration: 10-12 minutes
πΉ Setup:
- Offensive player starts at the three-point line.
- A defender stands at the free-throw line.
π How to Play:
- The offensive player attacks the basket against a physical defender.
- The defender applies light contact without fouling.
- The offensive player must finish strong using floaters, layups, or body control.
- Rotate after 5 possessions per player.
π― Coaching Focus:
β Teach absorbing contact while maintaining control.
β Reinforce strong finishes with both hands.
β Encourage aggressive takes to the hoop.
π Variations:
- Limit offensive players to two dribbles before shooting.
- Use different finishing moves each round.
5. Quick Release Shooting Drill (Shooting & Decision-Making)
π Objective: Improve catch-and-shoot ability with defensive pressure.
β³ Duration: 10 minutes
πΉ Setup:
- Players pair up with one rebounder and one shooter.
- Coach or partner closes out as a defender.
π How to Play:
- Shooter receives a pass and must shoot immediately before the defender contests.
- If the defender is too close, the shooter must pump fake and drive.
- Rotate after 10 shots per player.
π― Coaching Focus:
β Encourage quick feet into shooting position.
β Teach decision-making under pressure.
β Reinforce high release and follow-through.
π Variations:
- Add a shot clock (5 seconds per attempt).
- Players must take at least 3 three-pointers per round.
6. Scramble Rebounding Drill (Rebounding & Hustle)
π Objective: Teach players to fight for rebounds and secure second chances.
β³ Duration: 8 minutes
πΉ Setup:
- Four players form a square around the paint.
- Coach shoots a random miss off the backboard.
π How to Play:
- Players must box out and fight for the rebound.
- Whoever secures the ball must go up strong and finish.
- The drill resets after each basket.
π― Coaching Focus:
β Teach boxing out and high-pointing the ball.
β Reinforce second-chance effort.
β Encourage aggression while keeping control.
π Variations:
- Add a pass out to a shooter after securing the rebound.
7. 4-on-4 Shell Drill (Team Defense & Communication)
π Objective: Develop proper team defensive movement and positioning.
β³ Duration: 12 minutes
π How to Play:
- Offense moves the ball around the perimeter.
- Defenders must close out, shift, and communicate.
- If the offense penetrates, defenders must help and recover.
- Switch offense and defense after 2 minutes.
π― Coaching Focus:
β Reinforce constant defensive communication.
β Teach proper stance and positioning.
β Encourage aggressive but controlled movement.
π Variations:
- Add one dribble per offensive player for more realism.
8. 3-on-2, 2-on-1 Fast Break Drill (Transition Offense & Defense)
π Objective: Improve decision-making and fast-break execution.
β³ Duration: 12 minutes
π How to Play:
- Three offensive players attack two defenders in transition.
- Once the play ends, two offensive players become defenders against an incoming attacker.
- The cycle continues quickly.
π― Coaching Focus:
β Teach passing over forcing bad shots.
β Reinforce spacing and attacking gaps.
β Train quick transition recognition.
π Variations:
- Restrict the offense to one pass before shooting.
