These 8 essential training drills improve dribbling, passing, shooting, defense, and teamwork
- Focus on fundamental technique in all drills, such as proper two-hand passing
- Ensure players do their best to keep their eyes up when dribbling
- Do not lose sight of the fact, these drills are supposed to be FUN
Here are eight detailed training drills for Under-12 basketball players, designed to develop fundamentals, coordination, and game awareness while ensuring fun and skill progression.
1. Dribble Tag (Ball-Handling & Awareness)
π Objective: Improve dribbling under pressure while enhancing spatial awareness.
β³ Duration: 8-10 minutes
πΉ Setup:
- Each player has a basketball.
- Define a playing area (half-court or smaller).
- Choose 1-2 "taggers" who also dribble.
π How to Play:
- All players must dribble continuously while avoiding the taggers.
- If a player gets tagged, they must freeze in place but keep dribbling.
- To get unfrozen, another player must dribble around them twice.
- Rotate taggers every 2-3 minutes.
π― Coaching Focus:
β Players must keep their heads up while dribbling.
β Encourage change of direction and speed to avoid taggers.
β Reinforce control under pressure.
π Variations:
- Use weak-hand only dribbling.
- Add more taggers for an extra challenge.
2. Cone Weave Dribbling (Ball-Handling & Control)
π Objective: Develop tight control and improve directional changes while dribbling.
β³ Duration: 8 minutes
πΉ Setup:
- Set up cones in a straight line (3-5 meters apart).
- Players form lines behind the first cone.
π How to Play:
- Players dribble through the cones, weaving in and out.
- Each round focuses on a different move:
- Round 1: Basic control dribble.
- Round 2: Crossovers at each cone.
- Round 3: Between-the-legs dribble.
- After the last cone, players sprint back to the start.
π― Coaching Focus:
β Keep low dribbles and eyes up.
β Use quick, controlled movements around cones.
β Ensure a strong first step after each move.
π Variations:
- Add a defender at the end to apply pressure.
- Time each round and encourage players to improve their speed.
3. Hot Potato Passing (Passing & Decision-Making)
π Objective: Improve quick decision-making and passing accuracy.
β³ Duration: 8 minutes
πΉ Setup:
- Players form groups of 3-5 in a circle or line.
- Use one basketball per group.
π How to Play:
- Players must pass the ball quickly without holding it for more than 2 seconds.
- Coaches can call out different passes:
- Chest pass
- Bounce pass
- Overhead pass
- If a player hesitates too long, they do 5 push-ups or jump squats.
π― Coaching Focus:
β Players should use strong passes with proper technique.
β Teach quick decision-making and awareness.
β Encourage calling out names before passing.
π Variations:
- Add a defender in the middle to challenge passing accuracy.
- Increase speed with a countdown timer.
4. Layup Relay Races (Finishing & Footwork)
π Objective: Improve layup efficiency at full speed.
β³ Duration: 10 minutes
πΉ Setup:
- Two lines at half-court or beyond the 3-point line.
- Each player has a basketball.
π How to Play:
- The first player in each line dribbles full speed toward the basket.
- They must execute a perfect layup, grab their rebound, and dribble back.
- The next player in line goes as soon as the first player scores.
- First team to make 10 layups wins.
π― Coaching Focus:
β Ensure players use proper layup footwork (right foot for right-hand layups, left foot for left-hand layups).
β Encourage control and accuracy over speed.
β Stress rebounding and finishing strong.
π Variations:
- Require left-hand layups only.
- Add defenders for a contested finish.
5. 3-on-3 Cut & Pass (Teamwork & Movement)
π Objective: Teach movement without the ball and effective passing.
β³ Duration: 12-15 minutes
πΉ Setup:
- Split into 3v3 half-court games.
- Players must complete at least 2 passes before shooting.
π How to Play:
- Players pass and cut instead of standing still.
- Off-ball players must move into open space.
- Defense cannot steal passes but can contest shots.
- First team to 5 baskets wins.
π― Coaching Focus:
β Teach spacing and off-ball movement.
β Encourage quick, decisive passing.
β Reinforce proper shooting form under pressure.
π Variations:
- Add a defensive player to force smarter cuts.
- Require one bounce pass per possession.
6. Dribble Knockout (Ball Protection & Reaction Time)
π Objective: Improve ball protection and reaction time under pressure.
β³ Duration: 8 minutes
πΉ Setup:
- Every player has a ball.
- Play in a small area (inside the key or half-court).
π How to Play:
- Players must dribble and protect their ball while knocking other playersβ balls away.
- If a player loses their ball, they are out for the round.
- Last player dribbling wins the game.
π― Coaching Focus:
β Encourage low dribbling and tight ball control.
β Reinforce awareness and reaction time.
β Teach using the body to shield the ball.
π Variations:
- Players can only use their weak hand.
- Reduce the playing area to increase difficulty.
7. Red Light, Green Light Dribble (Dribbling & Control)
π Objective: Improve ball-handling while reacting to cues.
β³ Duration: 8 minutes
πΉ Setup:
- Players line up at the baseline, each with a basketball.
- Coach stands at the opposite baseline.
π How to Play:
- When the coach says βGreen Lightβ, players dribble forward.
- When the coach says βRed Lightβ, they must stop immediately.
- Players who fail to stop properly go back to the start.
π― Coaching Focus:
β Keep eyes up while dribbling.
β Emphasize quick stops and control.
β Teach acceleration and deceleration.
π Variations:
- Use different commands (e.g., βYellow Lightβ = dribble in place).
- Require players to use their non-dominant hand.
8. Passing & Cutting Game (Game Awareness & Decision-Making)
π Objective: Improve passing, cutting, and spacing.
β³ Duration: 10 minutes

- Divide into teams of 4.
- Use half-court with one basket.
π How to Play:
- Players must pass and cut before shooting.
- No standing stillβplayers must move to open space.
- Game is played to 5 points with no dribbling allowed.

β Reinforce quick decision-making.
β Teach spacing and passing fundamentals.
π Variations:
- Add a shot-clock countdown for quicker decisions.
